'TOMMY' SYNOPSIS' |
|
10 years ago we collaborated on a project with the original techno soul band 'Super Collider', we produced a visual accompaniment to an hour long audio mixtape they produced for German music TV channel 'Viva'. The A/V mix had recurring themes, a restricted color palette and a fusion of film and animation. Each song had it's own visual, 18 in all, with a 6 week schedule the work was instinctive, playful and responsive. This past summer we have done much the same thing on a much larger scale for the 'worlds first rock opera', The Who's 'Tommy'. Firstly a storyboard was created utilizing work and ideas already produced by a selection of students for a Teenage Cancer Trust concert held at the Royal Albert Hall in March 2011. We chose reoccurring themes, pinpointed motifs and suggested how ideas could be expanded on to increase the shows production value for an initial 30+ date U.S tour. Roger was very keen to have an abstract and holistic approach to the project rather than the theatrical narrative interpretation which has often been seen. The album is performed from start to finish, as it is on vinyl, for the first time since it's initial release in 1969. The 4 month project involved 10 students initially, all with different levels of competence and commitment between May - September 2011, some of the group were in their final year which dictated their availability. Our input varied from track to track, a couple of the original videos were left untouched and a few we started anew. |
